A South African police clearance is often needed at short notice for a visa, a new job or a residency application. Most delays are avoidable. Here are the five mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.
1. Unclear fingerprints
Smudged or incomplete prints are one of the most common reasons an application is held up. Make sure each print is clear and complete when you have your fingerprints taken. If you have any difficulty getting your fingerprints taken where you live, please contact us for alternative solutions.
2. Missing or unclear ID copy
Always include a clear, readable copy of your South African ID or passport. A blurry photo taken on your phone can cause the application to be queried.
3. Not stating the right purpose
The reason you need the clearance (work visa, residency, citizenship, adoption, employment) affects what extra steps you may need afterwards. Be clear about the purpose from the start.
4. Forgetting about apostille or attestation
Many countries will not accept the certificate on its own. Some need an apostille, others need embassy attestation or a certified translation. Check what the receiving authority wants before you apply, not after the certificate arrives.
5. Leaving it too late
Processing and courier times add up, especially from overseas. If you have a visa or job deadline coming up, start as early as you can so the clearance does not hold you up.
