Moving to Dubai, starting a new job in Abu Dhabi or arranging a family residence visa in the UAE? Your South African documents may need to be officially authenticated before they can be accepted.
Whether you require a South African Police Clearance Certificate, university qualification, birth certificate or marriage certificate, understanding the UAE attestation process can help you avoid unnecessary delays.
At ClearPath SA, we assist South Africans living locally and abroad with document authentication, attestation and international document delivery.
How ClearPath SA helps: we check your documents before submission, handle the submission and DIRCO authentication, coordinate the UAE attestation steps, follow your application up and arrange international courier delivery. Request a quote and we will explain what is needed for your documents.
Document attestation is the official process used to verify the authenticity of signatures and seals appearing on documents.
For South African-issued documents intended for use in the United Arab Emirates, the process generally involves authentication by South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), followed by the applicable UAE attestation procedure.
The exact requirements depend on the document type and the organisation requesting it.
Common examples include:
Not every document follows the same authentication procedure. Some documents require additional verification before they can be submitted to DIRCO.
The document must be suitable for authentication.
Depending on its type, this may involve obtaining an original certificate, verifying an academic qualification or completing another preliminary requirement.
The document is submitted for the appropriate authentication through DIRCO.
This verifies the relevant South African signature or seal for international use.
South African documents must first undergo the applicable DIRCO authentication before the UAE Embassy will attest them. DIRCO works from the original document.
The UAE Embassy in Pretoria offers a Digital Attestation Service for eligible South African documents. One application covers both UAE Embassy attestation in South Africa and UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation in the UAE.
The application is made online through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The official page states that the original physical document is required for the process. An approved courier collects the originals, and they are returned by courier after processing, while the attested documents are sent by email.
Each document is submitted individually, and laminated documents cannot be attested.
The online application starts with a login to the MoFA website using UAE Pass, the UAE's national digital identity app. The official pages say people without an account can register for one, and that applications can be made on someone else's behalf. The UAE Embassy in Pretoria told us in writing on 30 October 2026 that applicants outside the UAE can choose an option without UAE Pass, although its published page describes only the UAE Pass login. Confirm the current route with the Embassy when you apply. ClearPath SA cannot bypass any government login requirement, and we will tell you plainly what is needed from you.
Once the applicable procedures are completed, the document can be returned to the applicant.
Before submitting it to your employer, immigration representative or other receiving authority, confirm whether any additional requirements apply.
The process involves several authorities, original documents and courier movements, and a mistake can mean starting again. With ClearPath SA you get:

Some UAE employment and immigration processes may require a police clearance or certificate of good conduct.
However, requirements can vary depending on the visa category, employer and relevant authority.
If you are starting a new job or changing employers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or elsewhere in the UAE, confirm the exact requirement with your employer or public relations officer (PRO).
ClearPath SA can assist with obtaining a South African Police Clearance Certificate and arranging the applicable document authentication and attestation services.
For more on this, see our page on South African police clearance from the UAE.
Yes. South Africans living overseas can apply for a South African Police Clearance Certificate without returning to South Africa.
Applicants generally need a suitable set of fingerprints, identification details and the required application documentation.
Fingerprints may be taken through an appropriate police service or South African diplomatic mission, depending on local arrangements. See our fingerprinting guidance and submission checks for how this works. Once your fingerprints are taken, ClearPath SA checks your application before it is submitted and handles the submission for you. In Abu Dhabi, the South African Embassy told us it assists only if your UAE residence visa was issued in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Ruwais, and refers residents with Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah visas to the Consulate-General in Dubai. Confirm days, times and the form with the mission before you go, or ask ClearPath SA to explain the options for your emirate.
ClearPath SA can guide applicants through the documentation required for their South African application. Fees and timeframes depend on your application, so request a quote and we will confirm the pricing and expected timeline for your documents.
An apostille should not automatically be treated as sufficient for documents intended for use in the UAE.
South African documents generally require the authentication and attestation route specified by the relevant UAE authorities.
Before arranging any authentication, confirm the destination country and the receiving organisation's requirements.

Processing times vary depending on the document, the issuing authority, DIRCO requirements and the applicable UAE attestation procedure.
Where a new South African Police Clearance Certificate must first be obtained, that process adds to the overall timeline.
ClearPath SA will review your requirements and provide an estimated processing timeframe before proceeding.
Can ClearPath SA help if I am already living in the UAE?
Yes. We assist South Africans living abroad with South African document services, subject to the applicable requirements.
Do I need to travel to South Africa for fingerprints?
Generally, no. Fingerprints for a South African Police Clearance Certificate can be obtained overseas through suitable providers.
Can my university degree be attested for employment in Dubai?
South African academic qualifications may be eligible for authentication and attestation. The exact requirements depend on the qualification and receiving authority.
Can ClearPath SA arrange international delivery?
International courier arrangements can be included in your quotation.
Do I need attestation when changing jobs in the UAE?
Not necessarily. Your employer or PRO should confirm whether a new police clearance or attested document is required.
Do I need to send the original document?
Yes. The UAE Embassy's digital attestation process requires the original physical document. A courier collects it and returns it after processing.
Is DIRCO authentication required first?
Yes. South African documents must first be authenticated by DIRCO before the UAE Embassy will attest them.
Do I need a UAE Pass?
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks individuals to log in with UAE Pass for the digital attestation application. People without an account can register for one. The UAE Embassy in Pretoria told us in writing on 30 October 2026 that applicants outside the UAE can choose an option without UAE Pass, although its published page describes only the UAE Pass login. Confirm the current route with the Embassy when you apply.
